Exporting timber and wood products

New Zealand operates in a regulatory framework that ensures a low risk of illegal logging within New Zealand forests. This regulatory framework is supported by a robust legislative regime, a low level of corruption, and a highly professional forestry industry.

Responsibilities of wood exporters

When exporting products from New Zealand you are responsible for:

• complying with relevant export eligibility requirements if using indigenous timber
• meeting the importing country's requirements
• reporting to MPI if your MPI-certified product is refused entry by a destination country
• keeping appropriate records.

Who to contact

MPI uses approved Independent Verification Agencies (IVAs) to verify certificate information for export wood. If you have questions about exporting logs, timber or other wood products, contact an IVA.
