Application for a proposed mātaitai reserve at Cape Runaway

Te Whānau a Kauaetangohia Hapū has applied for a mātaitai reserve at Cape Runaway in the Bay of Plenty. The hapū is seeking approval to create the Kauaetangohia Mātaitai Reserve.

Mātaitai reserves are areas closed to commercial fishing that may have bylaws affecting recreational and customary fishing.

At a later date, we will make a call for further submissions from persons who take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or own quota, and whose ability to take such fish, aquatic life or seaweed or whose ownership interest in quota may be affected by the proposed mātaitai reserve.

What are the boundaries of the proposed reserve?

Te Whānau a Kauaetangohia Hapū has applied for a mātaitai reserve for the fisheries waters within the following lines:

  • from the starting point on the mean high-water mark at 37o37.150’S and 177o56.770’E (near Mangatoetoe stream mouth), then
  • by a line in a due north direction to a point approximately 6 nautical miles offshore at  37o31.143’S and 177o56.770’E, then
  • proceeding in a generally easterly direction by a line, each point of which is 2 nautical miles from the mean high-water mark, to a point offshore at 37o30.533’S and 178o05.262’E, then
  • by a line in a due south direction to a point on the mean high-water mark at 37o32.580’S and 178o05.262’E, then
  • by a line proceeding in a generally south-westerly direction along the mean high-water mark to the starting point.

Public meeting in June

A public meeting will be held at 6.30pm on 7 June 2018 at Kauaetangohia Marae, 1153A State Highway 35, Cape Runaway, Ōpōtiki.

Public notices about the meeting with the local community and the call for written submissions are scheduled to appear in the:

  • Whakatāne Beacon on 16 May 2018 and 25 May 2018
  • Ōpōtiki News on 22 May 2018 and 31 May 2018.

Next steps

After this local community consultation closes, we will run another consultation. It will be advertised in the Whakatāne Beacon, the Ōpōtiki News, and on this website. Written submissions will be invited from persons who take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or own quota, and whose ability to take such fish, aquatic life or seaweed or whose ownership interest in quota may be affected by the proposed mātaitai reserve.

Submissions are public information

Note, that any submission you make becomes public information. People can ask for copies of submissions under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). The OIA says we have to make submissions available unless we have a good reason for withholding it (refer to sections 6 and 9 of the OIA).

Tell us if you think there are grounds to withhold specific information in your submission. Reasons might include that it's commercially sensitive or it's personal information. However, any decision Fisheries New Zealand makes to withhold information can be reviewed by the Ombudsman, who may tell us to release it.
