Note for annual data series
Annual production and roundwood series have not been published since the year to 31 March 2018, due to system issues that we are working to resolve. We will inform stakeholders once this information has been updated. In the meantime, quarterly production, stock and roundwood removal statistics are still updated regularly and are available.
How this information is collected
Timber, panel, and pulp mills
MPI surveys wood processors from around New Zealand, both quarterly and annually. MPI asks for production and stock information on:
- log and roundwood removal statistics
- sawn timber
- panels
- pulp, paper, and paperboard.
Each survey represents about 125 timber, panel, and pulp mills throughout New Zealand.
This production information is then compiled with export data sourced from Statistics New Zealand. Combining these 2 data sets allows MPI to calculate an estimate for the roundwood removed from New Zealand forests. This estimate for roundwood removals is then released, along with production and trade information.
Mass timber production
MPI created the first mass timber production survey in 2023. The survey's purpose is to understand the production volumes of engineered timber in New Zealand.
To collect the data, MPI sent an online survey to 12 wood processors. It asked for production volumes of engineered timber for years 2018-22 and estimated volumes for 2023 and 2024.
