About exemptions
An exemption permits you to import, manufacture, sell, or use an agricultural chemical without registration – if you comply with the conditions of the exemption.

Exemptions are made by product type or group. Only groups that pose very little risk, if the products are manufactured and used properly, can be exempt. Conditions placed on the exemptions are to minimise risk.
Exempt groups
Examples of exempt groups include:
- pH buffers
- drift retardants
- animal repellants and attractants applied directly to plants
- anti-transpirants (substances that prevent plant water loss).

Check if your product is exempt
If you are unsure of your product's status under the ACVM Act, a class determination will tell you.
Research, testing, and teaching exemption
If your organisation regularly does research, testing, and teaching (RTT) with agricultural compounds, you may be eligible for an exemption under the ACVM Regulations.
This exemption allows you to do RTT activities under an operating plan, without having to apply for individual approval every time.
