Suspension of unused or out-of-date nursery stock import pathways and reformat of nursery stock import health standard

Updates

29 July 2024 – Consultation extended

We've further extended the closing date of this consultation to Friday 30 August 2024.

26 July 2024 – Updated list and consultation extended

The list of nursery stock affected by this proposal has now been updated as an Excel spreadsheet. The consultation has also been extended to close on Friday 16 August 2024.

23 July 2024 – New document to be issued

We are going to update the list of nursery stock affected by this proposal after becoming aware of an error in the list that we published last Thursday (18 July).

We have heard that some of the plant genera have been traded recently and were proposed for suspension incorrectly.

The plants mislabelled in the proposal were associated with some pests identified by our emerging risk system. We had addressed the concerns for these pests and accidentally incorrectly updated the proposal before publishing. Some of these pathways are very active and the mislabelling may have concerned you. We are sorry for the confusion and concern this error has caused and will fix this.

We will fix these errors and publish the revised list by the end of the week (26 July). We will publish the revised list as an Excel spreadsheet because we have heard it would be useful.

The proposal list will be a live list throughout this consultation. After our update this week, if you find anything you believe to be incorrect, let us know, and include any supporting information. Whenever we update the list, we will let you know.

We have also moved the documents (yet to be updated) to the section labelled 'What’s being proposed?' because the documents are supporting information to be read alongside the proposal information.

Have your say

From 18 July to 30 August 2024, Biosecurity New Zealand seeks your feedback on 2 proposed changes to the import health standard Importation of Nursery Stock.

The proposed changes are:

  1. reformatting the standard to make it more user-friendly
  2. suspending pathways (plant genus from a specific country) that are not used and/or are out of date.

We are proposing these changes to ensure:

  • the standard is useable
  • we can focus on the pathways that are important to the sector.

Further details about the proposed changes are on this page:
