Vessel biofouling has been previously implicated as a pathway for the spread of molluscan pathogens (e.g., Bonamia ostreae, ostreid herpesvirus). This proof-of-concept research used a series of laboratory and field trials to investigate the likelihood of translocating pathogens of bivalve molluscs via biofouling organisms associated with vessels, or equipment associated with the aquaculture industry.
