You can only import horses, donkeys, and their cross-breeds from a list of approved countries. To help keep New Zealand disease and pest-free, requirements are in place for importing these animals.
The increasing volume of trade and travel is placing extra pressure on our biosecurity systems. New pests and diseases can not only affect human health but may also damage agriculture or horticultural production, forestry, and tourism, and make it more difficult to trade in international markets. Importers are among the most important people in defending against potential biosecurity dangers.
