This report describes the recreational landed catch of southern bluefin tuna in the 2019–20 fishing year. The winter fishery off Cape Runaway makes up the largest component of this catch. An on-site boat ramp survey estimated the catch from Waihau Bay to be 304 (CV 0.015) southern bluefin. National sport fishing club records and charter boat catches were compiled. The 2910–20 national recreational harvest estimate for southern bluefin tuna is 48.9 t with an estimated range of 46.6 t to 51.3 t.

This report presents available New Zealand commercial fishery catch-at-age data for hake (Merluccius australis) caught by trawl, and ling (Genypterus blacodes) caught by trawl and longline, up to the 2018–19 fishing year, and bottom trawl survey catch-at-age data sets for both species up to the summer of 2020.

This report provides information on zooplankton distributions in the Southern Ocean based on sampling by the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey, including from New Zealand research and fishing vessels. Statistical models were used to examine the spatial and seasonal distribution of key groups of zooplankton including copepods, euphausiids and pteropods, and to investigate long-term changes in their abundances. Characteristic zooplankton communities in the Southern Ocean were also identified.

This feasibility assessment considers passive acoustic monitoring systems, using the echolocation and communication clicks of the Hector’s dolphins to estimate their location within the water column, and therefore the proximity to demersal trawl fishing equipment. The study examines different array and localisation tracking concepts, possible detection ranges, and installation locations for hydrophones using theoretical simulations

This document summarises the observational and research data for southern blue whiting to 2019. Included here are time series of relative abundance from the wide area R.V. Tangaroa acoustic surveys, as well as from local area aggregation industry vessel acoustic surveys, CPUE indices for Bounty Platform and Campbell Island Rise, and trawl survey indices for the Auckland Islands Shelf, Campbell Island Rise, and Pukaki Rise, as well as updated time series of length-at-age and catch-at-age.
