About pre-employment checks
Recruitment for all MPI roles involves a number of pre-employment checks. This is due to the nature of our work, and the high standards of integrity and safety we expect from employees. Pre-employment checks vary depending on the role you apply for.
Referee checks
An essential part of the recruitment process is confirming your ability to perform in the role with previous employers. Ideally, we'll do 2 reference checks, with your consent, with previous managers or stakeholders that you identify.
Criminal conviction check
To become an MPI employee you will need to pass a criminal conviction check. This may be either a Ministry of Justice or police check.
Drug and alcohol screening
If you've applied for a safety-sensitive role you will need to pass a urine screening test for alcohol, illicit drug use or misuse of prescription drugs. We will cover the cost of the test. You will know if the role you are applying for is considered safety-sensitive as it will be indicated in the role advertisement and job description.

Qualification check
If you require a specific qualification for the job you’ve applied for, MPI will check your qualifications.
Security clearance check
You may need a security clearance for the role you are applying for. If so, you'll need to meet eligibility criteria to apply for a national security clearance. We'll discuss this with you after you have applied.

Proof of identity and right to work check
We employ candidates from all walks of life, and embrace cultural diversity. We welcome international applicants. However, we won't consider your application unless you have the legal right or applicable visa to work in New Zealand.
