Mānuka Charitable Trust
The Mānuka Charitable Trust was established in February 2020, with support from the government and funding through the Provincial Growth Fund. Its role is to act as kaitiaki for the taonga that is Leptospermum scoparium, and the name Mānuka Honey.
The trust takes over this role from the Mānuka Honey Appellation Society, which started in April 2016 to protect and preserve the name Mānuka Honey as an international certification trademark for genuine honey produced in Aotearoa New Zealand. This acknowledges the interests of Māori and iwi in the term Mānuka Honey and is consistent with the principles and obligations contained within the Treaty of Waitangi.
