Animal welfare and vertebrate toxic agents
Vertebrate toxic agents (VTAs) are trade name products used to kill, control, or limit the viability of vertebrate pests. Poisons are often called "vertebrate toxic agents" in legislation and technical reports.
Examples of poisons used in New Zealand to kill pests such as possums, rats, and stoats are:
- 1080
- brodifacoum
- PAPP (para-aminopropiophenone).
VTAs must be authorised under the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines (AVCM) Act 1997 and regulations for manufacture, sale, and use. Animal welfare is a consideration for the registration of any VTA under the Act.
ACVM Act 1997 – New Zealand Legislation
VTAs must be used according to label instructions to meet your obligations under the Act.
