Food and supplements for companion animals

Allowed if:
  • It is commercially manufactured and packaged, in its original unopened packaging, does not require refrigeration before the package is opened, and is labelled for animal consumption. 
  • The product does not make any drug-like (pharmacological) claims or therapeutic (able to treat disease) claims.  Otherwise, it is classed as a veterinary medicine and requires registration.
Extra tips:

Do not bring pork and chicken products. They are not allowed into NZ.

If the food contains viable microorganisms, check with the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). The authority is responsible for the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. These can be new organisms to New Zealand, which the EPA would want to check before it enters New Zealand. Email neworganisms@epa.govt.nz
