About our engagement with you
Nau mai, haere mai ki tenei kaupapa.
We want to connect with you about the Emissions Trading Scheme and its opportunities for Māori forestry. On this page we will:
- share with you information about forestry and the ETS as it relates to Māori interests
- enable you to make informed decisions about forestry and the ETS
- build an ongoing relationship with you as you consider forestry and the ETS
- receive your feedback on your interests and the ETS.
The information and education we provide will help you understand changes to the legislation and the context for how the ETS system works overall.

It is very important for us to receive your feedback. We will use it to improve the services we provide. Where appropriate, we will provide feedback to policy and decision-makers where your interests are affected.
Receiving and holding your information
In line with the privacy principles under the Privacy Act and the values of te ao Māori, we respect the mana of your personal information, the mātauranga to be held by us, and the taonga that this represents.
The information you provide will be held by Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service in a way that complies with:
- the Privacy Act
- the privacy terms and conditions that you consent to in any events for which you provide your information.

Three wānanga zui we held included a video presentation providing context on the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The video covers its purpose, how it works, and how forestry fits into the ETS.

A wānanga zui was held in February with Taitokerau Māori forests. The ETS101 wānanga was focused on the basics of the ETS and included:
- a broad overview of ETS
- information about eligibility for ETS
- upcoming changes such as averaging accounting.

Ngahere Māori
The Canopy website was developed by Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service to help people discover the environmental and economic benefits of planting trees.
Within Canopy, Ngahere Māori supports Māori landowners to see if planting trees is right for their whenua. The Ngahere Māori Emissions Trading Scheme page has more information about the scheme.
