Tiakina Kauri – protecting our kauri trees
Biosecurity New Zealand is investing in key kauri protection activities. Our Tiakina Kauri | Kauri Protection programme is doing this in partnership with mana whenua and collaborating agencies.
The Government has confirmed a National Pest Management Plan to provide nationwide consistency for managing the impact of Phytophthora agathidicida (commonly known as kauri dieback disease). The 10 rules within the plan support the protection of kauri trees and affect people who:
- visit kauri forest areas
- cultivate kauri trees
- have kauri trees on their land that are at risk.
You can read the plan below. Our FAQ document helps explain the 10 new rules and how they will be implemented.

What is Phytophthora agathidicida?
Phytophthora agathidicida is a fungus-like pathogen that infects and kills kauri. It spreads with soil movement. That soil may be moved:
- on footwear and other clothing and gear
- on vehicles driven in affected areas
- by animals – including wild pigs, stock and pets.
Kauri trees can be infected for a long time before they show any signs of sickness. Controlling the spread of Phytophthora agathidicida is critical to ensuring kauri are protected.
There is no known cure. The only way we can save our kauri forests is to contain the spread of the disease in its current locations and stop its spread into healthy areas.
A coordinated effort to protect and save kauri trees
Controlling the spread of the disease – regardless of who owns the land the trees are on – is critical to ensuring kauri are protected.
In partnership with mana whenua, Tiakina Kauri collaborates with regional councils across kauri lands. Together we provide education and awareness tools to communities. This includes cleaning stations and signage to support protection across kauri forest areas. These are designed to help ensure visitors to kauri forests follow the appropriate hygiene steps to help prevent the spread of Phytophthora agathidicida.
