Puffer fish must get food safety clearance
Puffer fish and puffer fish products are high regulatory interest foods, which means they require food safety clearance at the border.
This is due to the nature of the fish containing tetrodotoxin (TTX), a potent neurotoxin.
Puffer fish are any fish in the order Tetraodonitiformes.
Puffer fish can also be known as:
- Fugu
- Globe fish
- Swell fish
- Bok
- Hétún.
Puffer fish can be imported to New Zealand only from Australia and the Republic of Korea.
