Importing laboratory animals

Laboratory animals and their semen and embryos (germplasm) must meet certain requirements to be imported, and strict biosecurity measures are in place. Each application to import laboratory animals or their germplasm is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

The increasing volume of trade and travel is placing extra pressure on our biosecurity systems. New pests and diseases can damage agriculture or horticultural production, forestry, and tourism, as well as making it more difficult to trade in international markets. Importers are among the most important people in defending against potential biosecurity dangers.
