The talent on display at this year’s Ahuwhenua Trophy competition highlights the vast potential for Māori Agribusiness, says the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
“Through our Māori Agribusiness programme, we’re dedicated to partnering with Māori to unlock the potential of their land,” says MPI’s Deputy Director-General Ben Dalton.
“The sheep and beef farms that are finalists in this year’s Ahuwhenua Trophy competition should be proud of their commitment to sustainably growing their primary sector assets.”
Mangaroa Station in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne, Paua Station north of Kaitaia, and Maranga Station near Gisborne were announced as finalists of the 2015 Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ Māori Excellence in Farming award at an event in parliament last night.
“As a major sponsor of this competition, MPI is proud to acknowledge the pursuit of innovation and excellence by these Māori farmers,” says Mr Dalton.
“Unlocking the potential of Māori land will be key to achieving growth in New Zealand’s regions, which directly contributes to growing our economy as a whole.
“The Ahuwhenua Trophy competition is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the important role Māori play in the primary industries.”
Each of the finalists will showcase their properties at public field days in April and May. The winner of the 2015 Ahuwhenua Trophy will be announced on May 29.
MPI is a gold sponsor of the Ahuwhenua Trophy competition and is on the judging panel.
